3.37 mile, 12 turn road course used for professional and amateur car racing. Hosted Formula 1 US Grand Prix, from 1961 to 1981. And currently hosts the Indy Car Series Watkins Glen Indy GP since 2005.
This is actually the second road racing circuit to occupy this site. Most fans are aware of the 6.6 mile open road course used west of town from 1949-1952. However a second open road circuit ran on a 4.6 mile loop in this vicinity from 1953-1955. Most of the roads used in that circuit were built over and/or closed during construction of the present day road course in 1956.
Famous portions of the track include "the esses" (turns 3 and 4) which is a left, right combination while going steeply uphill taken at full throttle and the "bus stop" which is a chicane added to the back straight to slow cars down before the long and dangerous turn 5. The boot is not used for NASCAR, but is used for virtually all other forms of racing at the Glen.
