During Tsar Russia period Alytus was strongly militarized area. The fortifications, built in the last decade of 19th century were mentionedfor defence of bridges and ferries across river Nemunas.
Despite WWI and WWII damage Alytus fortifications survived. Around 1965 the second and third forts were destroyed due to massive industrialization and apartment construction in west Alytus. This fort in one of several fragments of former fortification system.
