The Palabora mine's open cast pit measures almost 2000 metres across, making it the largest man-made hole in Africa. Rio Tinto operates the Palabora mine (Rio Tinto 57%, Anglo American 17%) which produced 59,700 tonnes of copper in concentrate from its own operations during 2006. Its refinery produced 81,200 tonnes of copper cathode after buying in additional copper concentrates from third party suppliers. Palabora operated as an open-pit mine for some 30 years. It converted to an underground, block-caving operation from the end of the 1990’s and established full underground operations from October 2004.- Source: spilpunt.blogspot.com/
