  The small town has been LNA's last roadway towards its North Western Libya possesion after Gharyan's capture by the GNA in Summer 2019. Following GNA's successful capture of the Watiya Base in May 2020 and its subsequent offensives in the area, the town council agreed to join GNA peacefully on May 20, 2020. However This was unaccepted by the LNA militants in the city, who stayed in the city to make a stand and set ablaze on the council's building. After the city was sieged by GNA in all sides and battles insued all the way to the center of the town, LNA agreed to give up the city on May 21, 2020, leaving nearby LNA held towns of Rujban and Zintan stranded between GNA controlled areas and the desert.
