Cabrach 'place of sticks'

Cabragh is in the NE of the parish, bounded on the north by the Ravarnet River. Cabragh is a recurring townland name with examples in many counties in Ireland. It normally indicates poor land, possibly covered in brushwood, but by the 1830s the condition of all the land in Hillsborough parish was reported as 'good' (OSM xii 85). The earliest record of it is in 1640 but it may have earlier been the landunit next to Aghnaleck in Annahilt called Ballylisnekriegh in 1585, Ballylisnekenagh 1609, Ballylisnecreigh 1610. The lios of this name may refer to Cabragh Fort (J 296594) 'a very impressive site on a hilltop with extensive views' (NISMR).
