Although a city in its own right, it is surrounded by its better-known neighbour Manchester. It does, however have its own University and Cathedral.
While Salfordians see themselves as separate, most outsiders consider the area as part of Manchester.
Salford is well-known for its rugby league team, and is the birthplace of the artist L.S. Lowry. The Lowry Museum can be found in Salford.
Salford is the setting for the fictional town of Wetherfield in the long-running television Soap Opera Coronation Street.
