Until May 1940 the corpses of Mauthausen inmates were cremated in crematoriums in Steyr and Linz. To keep secret the increasing number of inmates killed, the SS deemed it necessary to build a crematorium in Mauthausen. Up to eight corpses could be cremated simultaneously in each of the three ovens. The ashes were tipped over an embankment onto an ash dump or scattered on one of the building sites.
The place is located in Hospital barracks
