A very fine grained carbonate mud formed under anoxic conditions in a lagoon on the edge of the Tethys Sea preserved in fine detail soft-bodied and delicate fossils such as jellies, worms, and the feathers of one of the earliest flying reptiles. As famous as the Burgess Shale in Canada. The limestone formed also made excellent lithgraphic plates which is what most of the rock here was quarried for.
