Palace of the Raja (king) of Cossimbazar.It belongs to the Roys, who are originally from Murshidabad, and were given the title of Raja by the British for their business acumen.
These silk merchants have their Rajbaari at Cossimbazar in Murshidabad, but their residence for years has been this house in Kolkata, which is a couple of years older than the Victoria Memorial Hall.The house was built by Martin Burns for the chief justice of the Calcutta High Court. But soon after, it was decided that such an opulent house was not needed for the post, and the house was auctioned.
The Cossimbazar Raj (the Roys) family was on the lookout for a residence in Kolkata, and they bought it from the government.
