  • One of the best preserved Minoan settlements outside the "palace" complexes at Knossos and Phaistos. This one preserves the walls and streets of a typical hill town, which is amazingly similar to modern Greek villages dating from over three thousand years later! Walking the narrow, winding streets of Gournia, you really get a sense of what it would have been like to live during Minoan times, and realize that the civilization created by these people was tremendously advanced. Almost inevitably you start to speculate, "What if...the volcano (Fira) hadn't blown? What if...the Mycenaeans hadn't taken over? What if...?" Hmm...
