A regular fixture of the morning traffic reports for nearly 20 years, as this junction - Provan - is usually where the daily M8 rush hour congestion starts in the westbound direction.

But the legacy of the Bruce Report can still be seen here if you dig deeply enough - the Stirling motorway - the M80 as it is now known, was always intended to branch from here except the funding to build it wasn't available when the M8 Monkland Motorway was built in the early 1970s, and Junction 13 merely served Carntyne and Blackhill. It wasn't until 1992 when the M80 Stepps Bypass came along when this junction found its real purpose in life.

But it was part of a much grander plan to have an outer orbital motorway (the South Link Motorway) which would have bisected the East End to join the M74 - if you draw an imaginary line from the M80 one can almost trace it through to Parkhead via various bits of empty land and gap sites. This road isn't actually that imaginary - the East End Regeneration Route (currently under construction) uses the original alignment, except the road will not be a motorway.

There is a great link which explains it all here:
