  this stadium opened in 1928 with accomodation for 70,000 spectators. the special feature of this stadium was that the iron umbrella was positioned over the outfield seating area, not the infield, as it is at koshien stadium. it was used primarily for amateur baseball before world war 2. pro ball came after the war when two pro leagues formed. large scale reconstruction of the stadium in 1973 resulted in the stadium looking as it does in the image you show above.
