Due to the beginning of the War in Donbas in 2014, the Donetsk National University (DonNU) was relocated to Vinnytsia.
In June 2016, 75 out of 105 staff members voted in favour of naming the university after one of its alumni, the poet Vasyl Stus.

A self-proclaimed “Donetsk State University”, which appeared in the premises of DonNU in occupied Donetsk, is not recognized by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and does not have accreditation.
