The Piano Building was built in 1867 by Brintons as a warehouse. Its north wall followed the curve of a right of way called “The Sling”. Another unusual feature of the building was that it was constructed over a short arm of the canal, enabling narrow boats to enter for unloading by hoists to all levels through hatches in the timber floors.

The name derives from the roof shape seen from adjacent mills, chimneys or the air. This resembles a grand piano by virtue of the curve of its north wall.
