Le Gavroche is a restaurant at 43 Upper Brook Street in London's Mayfair. It was opened in 1967 by the brilliant brothers Michel and Albert Roux, although the original premises were on Sloane Street.

Michel and Albert have certainly done more to improve the quality of food and cooking in England than anyone else - the top English restaurants are now up there with the very best in the world.

It serves classical French food, although some dishes come with something of a modern twist.

In 1982 it became the first restaurant in the UK to be awarded three Michelin stars.

Albert's son, Michel Roux Jr took over the kitchen in 1991 and remains the current head chef as of 2006. Under his stewardship, Le Gavroche has retained two Michelin stars and has been consistently placed in Restaurant's Top 50.

Michel left to run the Waterside Inn in Bray, Berkshire from 1973, which still has three Michelin stars - his son Alain now is head chef.

Alumni in kitchen include Marco Pierre White, the first English cook to gain 3 Michelin stars, since relinquished when MPW retired, and Gordon Ramsey who now has 3 stars too at his Chelsea restaurant. So le Gavroche not only had three stars but has two chefs who have each gone on to have three stars too.
