interesting place, weather / meteorological station
Weather station operated by the government of South Africa. Although Gough Island is a British possession the land the station is built on is leased to South Africa on contract and is treated as part of the magisterial district of Cape Town.
The current station was constructed in 1963 at Transvaal Bay on the south coast. Here, 150 feet above the sea, on a rolling lowland covered with bush and ferns, with vide views over the sea and to the inland hills, "Gough House" now shelters a seven-man team and its equipment.
