The East Gymnasium House is the oldest and can trace its origin back to the old franciscan monastry from the 13:th century. Where the house is today there was a wall surrounding their garden plot. Remainings of the wall is still visible in the lower part of the house wall facing Gymnasiegränd. The house was originaly larger but the part closest to the Riddarholmen Church was demolished by Gustav Banér in 1640 and the house got todays size and shape. The house was called the Banér Palace until 1821.
Stockholm Gymnasium that was established in 1821 bought the house at this time to be used as a gymnasium, this has given the name to the house and also to the street to the east of the house, Gymnasiegränd. In 1881 the house was being used by the Wallin school for girls which remained there until 1907 when the administrative court of appeal moved in and still remains there.
The Western Gymnasium House was built in the 19:th century when the Gymnasium had need for more space, this was also the time when the present footbridge between the two buldings was built.
The Swedish Market Court is the present day tenant of the West Gymnasium House.
