West Milton Bridge at site of Swanton Covered Railroad Bridge

USA / Vermont / Swanton /

Pay attention now. This could be confusing. There will be a test.

This site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as "Swanton Covered Railroad Bridge." However, in 1987, some high school kids were having a little graduation party and started a fire which destroyed the bridge.

Skip forward to 1994. The "West Milton Bridge," a Pennsylvania through-truss bridge about 20 miles south of here (also listed on the NHRP) is disassembled and replaced by a modern bridge.

Skip still further forward to 2009. The West Milton Bridge is reassembled on this spot as a rail trail crossing. A center section was added because the Missisquoi River is wider than the Lamoille River it originally spanned. It is set on the same stone pillars which support the original covered bridge.
