As a compromise with the Commonwealth of VA, Lovettsville settled on a rectangular design to slow traffic on the Berlin Turnpike in 2002. When a stoplight seemed prohibitive, the Commonwealth offered a traffic circle as a solution. Rejecting that, the then Lovettsville Mayor and Town Board developed this "town square" concept. Given this history, it is widely called the Squircle (a cross between a town square and a traffic circle). This name is significant enough to be used in fire, rescue, and law enforcement transitions of locations.

  • I grew up in Lovettsville and was friends with a local business owner, Bonnie Hawker. At her business anniversary, she shared with many people the name that I, her family friend, had given to the newly developed traffic thing in Lovettsville. I was about 15 at the time, and I called this traffic thing the squircle. As the then-mayor was present, as well as several other high profile people of the town, the name stuck. Though not many people know its origin, I'm proud that I had some sort of impact on the town. Sincerely, RLT
