On the north side of the Batanghari River, across from the City of Jambi, there is a cemetery that contains the graves of Arab immigrants and their descendants. The cemetery name is "Makam Arab Melayu." The word makam means grave, and Melayu is the name given to the original inhabitants of the area. Since the male immigrants from Arabia intermarried with the local women, their descendants are referred to as Arab Melayu."
