Lake Arrowhead is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Bernardino County, California, USA. The population was 8,934 at the 2000 census. Lake Arrowhead Village is an unincorporated community, with the Chamber of Commerce the de facto governing body.
Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, this area was originally a hunting and fishing area for the Serrano Indians. As the Mormons developed the San Bernardino area, the mountains were seen as a source of lumber. Waterman Canyon road was built in 1852 allowing serious logging to begin.
In the beginning, The Arrowhead Lake Company, a Los Angeles syndicate, bought Little Bear Lake (the original name of the area) and surrounding land (approximately 4,800 acres) in 1920, and changed the name to Lake Arrowhead, (taking the name from the rock formation in the form of an Arrowhead on the face of the San Bernardino Mountain, near Arrowhead Hot Springs, which is rooted in Indian legend and found at the bottom of Highway 18).
The Arrowhead Lake Company's plan was to develop the mile high man-made lake into an exceptional recreational and residential area. Between 1921 and 1923, the original Lake Arrowhead Village, built in the Norman style, was erected and included a dance pavilion, an outdoor movie theatre, restaurant, beach and bath houses. Three hotels were also built -- Arlington Lodge, Village Inn, and North Shore Tavern. Over $8 million was spent developing Lake Arrowhead, a private lake, into the most upscale resort in the Southern California mountains. The Village held its official opening on June 24, 1922.
The promotion for Lake Arrowhead Village was done via postcards, newspaper and magazine advertising. Artists were encouraged to paint Lake Arrowhead Village and the surrounding area. Many of the paintings were turned into postcards to help advertise Lake Arrowhead Village. This promotion made the Village an immediate success and the promotion of the new “High Gear Road” made Lake Arrowhead a popular tourist destination.
Some of the lakeside land was subdivided and sold for private homes and secluded north shore estates. Many Hollywood stars stayed at the hotels during the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, and some purchased homes in the resort. The studios frequently used the area for locations for major motion pictures.
During the war years, Lake Arrowhead Village was a popular rest and recuperation area for service men. Because of gas rationing, tourists became scarce. Throughout the next few decades Lake Arrowhead Village continued being a wonderful tourist attraction as well as the “downtown” of the mountain communities.
mountains were surveyed in 1852 and Waterman Canyon Road was chosen as the easiest route. Even though the upper levels were very steep, the Mormon Council of San Bernardino voted to build the road and allow public access. The completed road spanned from the City of San Bernardino to Crestline. According to historian Wallace W. Elliot, the last mile and a half of the road was so steep that wagon brakes were ineffective. “Teamsters were compelled to attach a heavy pine tree to the rear of the wagons to prevent their rapid descent.”
The first mill was in operation in 1852, using a steam engine hauled by Charles Crismon. It was located in Waterman Canyon. In 1853 a second steam engine was hauled to the top of the mountain and located between Crestline and Lake Gregory.
A second mountain top sawmill was also set up in 1853 by the Seely brothers in an area known as Seely Flats. It made use of a nearby creek to turn a wheel about ten feet in diameter, controlling a single vertical saw. Within the next year there was a total of six mountain top sawmills.
The mountain area was rich in sugar pine and cedar which sold well in both San Bernardino and Los Angeles. Baseline Road was built to facilitate the transportation of lumber to the Los Angeles market. It linked San Bernardino to the Cajon Road and shortened the trip by several miles.
The Mormons were recalled to Salt Lake City by 1857 and their mills were sold. The single vertical blade saw (muhlsage, German for mill saw) was replaced by multiple saw blades and finally by the circular saw; first used by Huston’s Mountain Steam Mill. The forest was nearly clear cut when the large circular saws were powered by big steam engines.
The largest lumber company was run in the early 1900’s by a company based in Michigan, the Brookings Lumber Company. They not only employed multiple circular saws, but also used narrow gauge railroads to haul the cut timber to the mill. Their lumber yard was located in the Fredalba area, where they produced 10 to 12 million board feet annually. They employed and housed over a 100 men (200 at the height of operation) to work at the mill. They also re-graded the City Creek Toll Road, although the upper portions were still steep.
In 1908 the Tri Counties Forest and Water Association was formed by concerned citizens trying to save what was left of the forest and the watershed. They lobbied for government regulation of the sawmills. Since the area had been declared a preserve, the Forest Service started to regulate the timberland.
By 1912, the Brookings Fredalba Sawmill was dismantled and shipped to Oregon.

For many years, Lake Arrowhead was the home of Santa's Village, "a fairyland setting where Santa's gnomes, elves and little animal friends make up a children's and grownups' paradise the year round." The tourist attraction opened in 1955 and closed 1998.
The Lake Arrowhead Yacht Club began operations in 1932 and is home to over 350 members and a fleet of over 35 sailboats. The boats that are sailed are the C-scow, Hobie, Gary 18, Holder, and Byte.

[edit] Economy & Culture
As a scenic mountain resort in the San Bernardino Mountains, Lake Arrowhead's economy is almost completely supported by tourism, both by casual vacationers and part-time residents. Despite this, full-time residents of Lake Arrowhead and surrounding mountain communities maintain a strong identity and sense of local pride. This sense of community is evidenced by local phrases used freely during conversations between residents. These include "up the hill" and "down the hill" to indicate movement or location away from or towards the mountains (as in the phrase "I'm going down the hill tomorrow to visit my mother.") Another common local word is "flatlander", always used to indicate non-residents and often used in a derogatory way to describe their ignorance of mountain life. An example might be "When will the flatlanders learn that you can't drive so fast on the ice?"
While Lake Arrowhead has no official "town center", the Lake Arrowhead Village serves as the main commercial area for both locals and tourists and includes a number of factory outlets, botiques, restaurants, and a supermarket.

Lake Arrowhead is located at 34°15′23″N, 117°11′29″W (34.256290, -117.191326)GR1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 32.8 km² (12.7 mi²). 29.7 km² (11.4 mi²) of it is land and 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it (9.71%) is water.
Outside of Lake Arrowhead Village there are several residential communities, which include: Cedar Glen and Deer Lodge Park just to name two. There are two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school in the area. Seven miles north of Lake Arrowhead is the Pacific Crest Trail, which boasts some of the most scenic vistas in Southern California.
[edit] The Lake
Lake Arrowhead is a manmade reservoir with a surface area of approximately 780 acres and a capacity of 48,000 acre-feet.[1]
The lake was originally intended to serve as part of a major waterworks project to provide irrigation water to the San Bernardino Valley, and construction of the Lake Arrowhead Dam began towards that end in 1904. However, the original project was halted due to litigation over water supplies to land owners on the desert side of the mountains. Construction of the dam was completed in 1922 by the Arrowhead Lake Company, a Los Angeles syndicate, as part of a plan to develop the area into a resort.[2]
The lake is currently owned by the Arrowhead Lake Association, which maintains the lake for the recreational use of its members.[3] The Lake Arrowhead Community Services District withdraws water from the lake for treatment and distribution to local residents for potable use.[4]
[edit] Demographics
