Nareg Elementary Armenian School [Nicosia] (Nicosia)

Cyprus / Government controlled area / Nicosia

In 1921 the co-educational Melikian school was built, and in 1938 the Ouzounian school. The two schools merged in 1950 and operated until 1963, when they were seized by Turkish-Cypriots. Between 1964-1972, the "Armenian School" was housed at the Melkonian premises. After substantial efforts by Representative Dr. Antranik L. Ashdjian, a new school (called "Nareg") was erected on Cyclops Street, inaugurated by Archbishop Makarios III on 12 November 1972, in the presence of the Catholicos of Cilicia Khoren I; as a gesture of solidarity, Cyclops Street was renamed Armenia Street. As of June 2005 Nareg Nicosia also has a gymnasium. A multi-purpose hall is expected to be completed in November 2009.
