Formed in 1939
During the Great Patriotic War, the regiment was awarded the Order of the Red Banner, received the title of guards, and for the liberation of the Pechenga region, the regiment was given the honorary name "Pechenga". During the conduct of hostilities during the Second World War, the pilots of the regiment in air battles shot down 361 enemy aircraft, destroyed 47 aircraft, sunk 29 various ships, destroyed - 40 vehicles, 9 artillery batteries, 4 field guns, over 2 thousand manpower enemy. During the war years, 554 people of the flight and technical staff were awarded orders and medals. 16 pilots received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, and the commander of the guard regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Boris Safonov, was awarded this high title twice, becoming the first twice Hero of the Soviet Union in history in the Great Patriotic War. After the death of the commander, the regiment was given his name.
