The Macrossan Stores Depot was established as a base for fighter squadrons in 1942. It later became one of 10 RAAF store depots across Australia. This depot includes a serviceable wartime airstrip, a railway spur line, a warehouse, four smaller store buildings (including three Bellman hangars) and several houses. Since 1956 Macrossan has been the Army's major northern bulk stores depot.
