Harmony Gold and Newcrest Resources are partners in this massive mine which is shaping up to be the world’s third-richest gold and copper deposit. Wafi-Golpu is valued at about A$9.3 billion and only Grasberg, in neighboring Indonesia, and Ivanhoe Mines Ltd.’s Oyu Tolgoi deposit in Mongolia, contain higher gold-equivalent ounces per ton of ore. It is one of the first major copper discovery in 20 years, and possibly the richest in 20 years some analysts say. First production is scheduled to start in 2016.
