After parti...tion he joined Pakistan Navy and saw active combat during 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars. In 1975, he was appointed as Chief of the Naval Staff in the rank of Vice Admiral. He later became Pakistan’s first four-star admiral in 1976. After retirement, the admiral was also appointed as Chairman of the Federal Public Service Commission in 1986.
