Birati is a neighbourhood in the Dum Dum municipality area, in the North 24 Parganas district in the state of West Bengal, India. It is located at the east of Calcutta (now called Kolkata), beside the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at Dum Dum. It is considered to be a part of Greater Kolkata or KMA, for which KMDA is the planning and development authority.
Birati's closeness to dumdum junction also enables residents to travel by the metro railways.
The pollution level in this place is still very low compared to Kolkata, but nowadays with a gradual spreading of so-called metro civilization it is also in the way of changes, but still green field, ponds and small muddy roads are there as well as new markets such as 'More', 'Spencers' and shopping complex such as 'Angana'. Now a bigbazar mall is at Birati.
Etymology~~~~~~~~~
The most popular thesis for the emergence of the name 'Birati' is the military forces used to take a rest in this place during their movements and for that place was named as biroti which means 'rest' in Bengali. Over time the name changed to 'Birati'.
