Artzn (Khararz)

Artzn was a major Armenian city located at Historical Armenia's Upper Armenia region, in Karin district of it, at upper stream of Western Euphrates, that is so known for its natural resources (oil, coal, iron mineral waters) and fertile lands in what is now the Erzurum region of modern Turkey. At beginning of ХХ c. only a village with numerous ancient ruines remaind. That village was called Khar Arz (in Turkish: Haraba - ruins and Arz - Artzn) which had about 1000 inhabitants, 847 Armenians and 153 Turks. During the Armenian genocide Armenian population of Artzn was entierly massacred by Turks. Since the 1987 Khararz village was renamed to Kahramanlar (heroes) (in order to hide from the maps the place of the ancient Armenian town of Artzn).
