Hao Airport (NTTO)

French Polynesia / Tuamotu-Gambier / Hao /

Hao Airport (IATA: HOI, ICAO: NTTO) is situated to the north of the island and is used as a base by Air Tahiti Nui, the domestic airline of French Polynesia. This airport serves many of the smaller eastern Tuamotus, whose landing strips are too short to land aircraft large enough to make the flight to Tahiti.

Formerly a French military base and airfield. Its unusually long runway (for the atoll's present population) was constructed to permit large transport aircraft (carrying materials for nuclear tests) to land. Their cargoes would be transported onward to nuclear test sites by ships. With the closure of the military program, the airport was transferred to civilian authorities in the year 2000.

Hao airport was a designated emergency landing site for the NASA Space Shuttle.
