Mutawintji Nature Reserve was established primarily for the conservation and protection of the yellow-footed rock-wallaby through the identification and control of threats. Access to the reserve is only allowed under permit for management, research and other purposes consistent with the protection of the yellow-footed rock wallaby. The reserve is almost contiguous with the Coturaundee Ranges, the only area in NSW where the wallaby is known.
