  • Lake Hughes has had an interesting history. The land (rocky and difficult to cultivate) was given to Boer War vets from Scotland and Ireland. A few hardy farmers made an attempt to carve out a life here, but it couldn't have been easy. By the 1930s-40s, nearby St. Jerome began to grow due to the Dominion Rubber factory. The "St. Jerome Gang" began to come to Lake Hughes on weekends, buying land and building cottages. By the 1960s cottages surrounded the lake. It's a unique place as many fourth generation families still frequent its calm waters in the summer, enjoying the traditional regatta and "fun day".
