Villa Ginori -Doccia (Sesto Fiorentino)

An early settlement is recorded here from the 14th century, when it was documented as the property of the powerful Della Tosa family. In 1525 the villa passed into the hands of the Ginori family. Work to enlarge the property began in the early 17th century and continued until it reached its present size. The villa's main front faces south, while the rear of the building looks out over wooded hills that were cut through vertically in the 17th century by the spectacular Viottolone Ginori, the grand walk that leads up to the top of Mt. Acuto. Lawns stretch out on the flat area to the south of the villa. To the north is and Italian-style garden, with geometric citrus groves and a ragnaia, or hunting forest. In 1730 Carlo Ginori modified part of the original layout of the garden by laying out one of the most famous botanical gardens in the entire Florence area. In 1818, finally, marquis Carlo Leopoldo Ginori built the large nature park, with a dense wood crossed by paths and driveways; this was linked by a new hill road called Via Piana, built by Carlo Leopoldo to connect the Doccia villa to the Carmignanello villa.
