This is a man made mine pit/lake. It's unique because it totally relies on springs for its water supply. If there are changes in the water table, like if a mine opens in Aurora, the water level in the lake reflects the change. Four years ago, there was a dramatic drop in the water level. It's dropped nearly 12 ft. in only a few years. This resulted in the beach here being closed. There are plans to repair the beach by June of 2011. Ore-Be-Gone was named after Garrison Keillor's made-up hometown of "Woe-Be-Gon." There are several good cliff jumping points surrounding this pit, however divers beware. It is illegal to do so.
