The Oosterscheldekering (in English: Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier), between the islands Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland, is the largest of the 13 ambitious Delta works series of dams, designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding. The construction of the Delta Works was in response to the North Sea Flood of 1953.

    There is a good article about it in the August 1984 issue of Smithsonian magazine.

    What I cant understand is why they did not build Hydro Electric plants into Storm Barrier. You have the force of the water twice aday a perfect place to put turbines to genarate green power. Ok it would cost money but it would be got back in the price of the free power that was produced. Filters could would have been fitted to stop rubbish like at the Amarongen Dam and Lock.
