monastery, settlement, interesting place
Situated high up in the Himalayas, is a monastery that provides travellers with an awe inspiring and breathtaking sight. The Phugtal Gompa lies in the remote region of south eastern Zanskar, in the far north of the country. One look and people would say that this strange and sacred monastery that is built directly into the cliff side, resembles some giant, human sized honeycomb.
Hanging onto the edge of a rocky gorge at the mouth of a giant cave teh Phugtal (Phuktal) monastery is filled with 70 or so Buddhist monks who live there, dividing most of their time either by reading holy books or the religous scriptures in the library or just uttering sacred mantras in the prayer rooms
