A monastery was founded here by St Patrick for St Columb in the sixth century.

Situated at a road junction at the west end of the village stands this large sandstone cross, it is believed to be either two separate fragments joined together or two fragments of the same cross with part of the shaft missing.

The East face pictured right bears scenes from the bible that are linked to the high cross at Clones in County Monaghan. From the base up the scenes are,

1. The Annunciation to shepherds.

2. Adoration of the Magi.

3. Baptism of Christ.

4. Marriage feast of Cana.

5. Loaves and Fishes.

6. Arrest of Christ.

7. Crucifixion.

On the arms on either side of the crucifixion are three figures.
