Helga Trefaldighet (Holy Trinity) Church (Uppsala)

Sweden / Uppsala / Uppsala

The church, which was inaugurated in 1302, has a facade that has undergone severe renovations. The interior has been covered by paintings signed Albertus Pictor since the 1470s. The wall painting "Meeting between Mary and Elisabeth" is one of the finest from the Swedish Middle Ages. According to the Erik Chronicle, Erik the Holy attended mass in the forerunner to this church before he was murdered. The story has it that barrels of wine were kept in the church tower for the coronation of Erik XIV in 1561, but that pressure from the height of fall made the uncorked wine begin to gush out over the church. During construction of Uppsala Cathedral, the old parish church was abandoned, so the local residents built a new church. These residents were mostly farmers and the church is also known as "The Farmers' Church".
