The bridge links Ellis Quay on the north bank of the River Liffey to Ushers Island on the south. A house on Usher's Island is the setting for the short story "The Dead" from the collection "Dubliners" by James Joyce.
Costing just under €9 million, the bridge was designed by Santiago Calatrava Vallas and the steelwork was manufactured by Harland and Wolff in Belfast. It opened on Bloomsday in 2003 in honour of James Joyce.
