The theater is dedicated to the city of Cosenza pianist Alfonso Rendano.
Built by the City, designed by architect Zumpano, in 1887, was completed in 1909 and inaugurated on November 20 of that year with a performance of Aida by Giuseppe Verdi.
Nineteenth-century neoclassical style, with three tiers, stood beautiful paintings and stucco, and in particular on the ceiling, painted by Henry cosentino Salfi. In 1943, a bomb aimed at the nearby Swabian castle, struck in the middle of the theater, destroying the roof and severely damaging all the furnishings.
Work of reconstruction began in 1953 and was reopened in 1966 with a performance of Aida, as for the first inauguration. In 1976 he was recognized traditional theaters for the intense activities supported by the theater.
Among the original parts we remember the historical curtain, painted by Neapolitan Paolo Vetri in 1901, and which is still preserved today, which shows the arrival at Cosenza, in 1433, the Duke of Calabria Louis III of Anjou and his wife Margaret of Savoy.
In 2002-2003 he was again restored and now boasts an exceptional variety of art.
