The United States Air Force's 628th Air Base Wing (628 ABW) is an administrative unit located at Charleston Air Force Base, in North Charleston, South Carolina. The 628 ABW was activated on 8 January 2010 to merge Charleston AFB with Naval Weapons Station Charleston as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure Program.
Base support services provided by the 628 ABW will include housing and facilities maintenance, security, childcare, public works, communications, finance, logistics, medical support, personnel, public affairs, legal, food service, contracts, and recreation.
The USAF 437th Airlift Wing is part of the Air Mobility Command (AMC) and is aligned under 21st Air Force at McGuire AFB, NJ. The base is also home to the 315th Airlift Wing a unit of the US AirForce Reserve Command which fully complements the operations of the host wing. The 437th Airlift Wing, includes four airlift squadrons, an operations group, a maintenance directorate, a mission support group, and a medical group. Charleston's mission is to fly C-17s and provide airlift of troops and passengers, military equipment, cargo, and aeromedical equipment and supplies.
The mission of the 437 AW is to command assigned airlift and supporting units; provide for the airlift of troops and passengers, military equipment, cargo and aeromedical airlift and to participate in operations involving the airland or airdrop of troops, equipment and supplies when required.
