Kunshan is the original birth place of Kunqu, which is not only the ancestor of all Chinese operas but the masterpiece of non-material heritage in the form of dictation. Kunshan is also the birth place of Gu Yanwu, a renowned thinker and educator. Establish in 1985, the Kunshan Economic and Technological Development Zone was listed as a key provincial development zone by Jiangsu People’s Government in January 1991. It is now a booming industrial and commercial city.
