The battle of Chillianwala Memorial Pillar was built by the British in memory of the battle of Chillianwala which was fought between the Sikh forces led by General Sher Singh and the British forces led by General Gough in 1849. Chillianwala was the biggest defeat suffered by the British on the Indian sub-continent.

  • It has been many years since I visited the Chillianwala site - back in 1997. I was struck by the elegance and simplicity of the memorial structures and the four large plain lime mortar slabs each containing the remains of up to 600 of the fallen. The obelisk with its square base has inscriptions on each of its four sides.in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and English. The British were the losers in this engagement so is it just a coincidence that the sun rises on the Hindi side, lights the Punjab face at mid day, and the Urdu one in the afternoon but never shines on the English side which faces North. Sadly for the Sikhs, theirs was a Pyrrhic victory as they had fought almost to the last man, while the British brought up reserves and ended the three year Sikh War in their favour in a final battle two months later.
  • After a long time I came on the page Chailyanwala, but nobody more yet commented on the battle of chailyanwala. I wants more facts about the battle of Chailyanwala, if some local person knows more facts about the battle, kindle comment on it.
