Village named after Goddess Selliyandiyamman செல்லியாண்டியம்மன் of Bhavani, who is the ancestral Goddess of the எழுமாத்தூர் பனங்காடை கோத்திரம் brotherhood resident in the village.

The residents are descended from Muthu Goundan, elder brother of Varanavasi Goundan who were the Pattagars of Elumathur. Varanavasi Goundan settled in தொட்டிபாளையம் near Bhavani.
