Built to the instructions of Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1852, it became unsafe in the 1950s and was substantially altered in a partial rebuild of 1962. The name 'tubular' was due to its tubular construction and even gave it's name 'Tubular' to the bus stop next to the railway at the bridge.
