Swedish Vikings maintained a long relationship with their well-established pagan religious traditions, and many apostles succumb to a brutal death when the missionaries arrived in Sweden to convert the wild heathens to Christianity.
In the 1st-century the apostle Staffan came to Hälsingland, whereupon he was met with considerable scepticism and forced to flee for his life through the desolate Hälsinge forests. In the barn know as Själstuga, Staffan was captured and brutally stoned to death by his persecutors. The body was brought back to Norrala and a stone superstructure was erected over his grave, Staffans Stupa. The monument can still be seen today within the grounds of Norrala's church cemetery. At the scene of the murder in Själstuga, a memorial of the apostle Staffan was erected in 1928. The Archbishop Nathan Söderblom unveiled the stone.
