Maastricht is unique among Dutch cities. The dialect of Dutch spoken is unique and there is a feeling that the people are not quite Dutch. Standing between Belgium and Germany on a sliver of land, Maastricht maintains its own personality. If you visit the Derlon Hotel you can eat breakfast right next to a Roman ruins exhibit. There is a hotel right on the Maas river called the Boatel, which is an actual boat turned into a small, rustic hotel. Maastricht was the sight for the 1992 treaty that led to the formation of the European Union. The city has approximately 120,000 people.

  • I was there in 2005 and stayed at the Boatel. Interesting setup. And I saw the ruins at the Derlon. Really an unique city.
