Bentheim Castle (Powder Tower) (Бад-Бентхайм)

Germany / Niedersachsen / Bad Bentheim / Бад-Бентхайм
 tower, castle, museum

This is the oldest part of the castle, originally built in the 11th and 12th century. The current shape was finished in the 16th century. This is the part which people could flee to in times of dire need. It is the best defended part.

The name comes from the use of the base part of this tower. Although originally used as a prison, it was later used as a storage for gunpowder. The present-day entrance was built at a later stage. Originally it could only be entered half-way up, using ladders, which could be withdrawn.

The walls at the base are 5,5m thick.
