This is the full extent of the original Spa-Francorchamps configuration (usually just known as "Spa"), was first used for racing in 1924. Designed by Jules de Their and Henri Langlois Van Ophem, the original 15 km (9.3 mile) triangle-shaped course used public roads between the Belgian towns of Francorchamps, Malmedy and Stavelot, as was the norm for racing circuits of the time.
Spa was the traditional site of the Belgian Grand Prix before the World Championship, and after WW II, it hosted 18 Formula 1 World Championship races between 1950 and 1970. Other prestigious events including the 24 Hour sports-car race, and the yearly Spa 1000km event. The circuit was characterized by long straights and long, fast corners, along with the hairpin at La Source, the famous Eau Rouge chicane and the infamous Masta Kink.
As with many circuits of the period, the circuit was the site of the deaths of several drivers and was dropped from the F1 calendar from 1970; "Old" Spa continued to be used for sports-car races until 1978. The circuit is one of eleven historic circuits included in the computer racing simulation "Grand Prix Legends".
