Second World War 1939-1945, military, navy, shipwreck, battleship
This is the site where IJN Yamashiro sank during Battle of Surigao strait in World War II. When the battle started, Yamashiro was moving north accompanied by her twin sister ship IJN Fuso which, unknown to her, had fallen behind burning badly, leaving her alone by herself with her escorts to meet Rear Admiral Jesse Oldendorf's battle group which was waiting in ambush a few miles north. This battle group included five of the battleships that were either sunk or heavily damaged at Pearl Harbor. Yamashiro was outnumbered and outgunned by Oldendorf's battle group during one of the greatest and last battleship duels ever recorded in history.
