Gyodong Elementary School was founded on September 18, 1894, as the first elementary school in Korea. The name of the school Gyodong originated from Hyangkyodong, where many educational institutions are populated nearby. As of 2019, the school produced more than 30,000 graduates in its 125 years of history under the school motto of ‘Be healthy, be wise, be useful‘.

Notable graduates include the nation's 4th president Yoon Bo-sun, the first Minister of Home Affairs Yoon Chi-young, writer Sim Hun, Eo Hyo-sun, Children's song composer Yoon Geun-young, and Yoon Seok-jung.
